A Pan–Tilt–Zoom camera (PTZ camera) is a camera that is capable of remote directional and zoom control. They can pan left and right, tilt up and down, zoom in and out. They are typically used for surveillance, video conferencing, live production, lecture capture, and distance learning since they usually work with a high-resolution camera and are more user-oriented than other cameras. This type of cameras have built-in optical zoom which ranges from 12x – 43x.
The PTZ domes may support features such as guard tour, tour recording, audio, input/output ports for external alarm devices, and relays, Gatekeeper functionality, auto-tracking, Network PTZ Camera Application Platform for intelligent video applications, and weather-proofing, including Arctic Temperature Control for extremely cold conditions.
Other type of cameras are ePTZ where a high-resolution camera digitally zooms and pans into portions of the image, with no physical camera movement
There is a significant difference between PTZ and ePTZ security cameras. Unfortunately, the distinction is not always clear and it can be hard to find concrete definitions.
Essentially, they are just two different ways to control the view from a camera.
Neither is strictly the “better” solution. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Majority of the times, this type of cameras used by military and high- security environment sectors. They could range in price anywhere from $2,500 – $50,000 depending on the specifications.
Many security system integrators facing this question during design stage. PTZ security cameras are much higher in cost compared to fixed dome or ePTZ, but they worth every dollar spent when it comes down to critical area coverage. Not only camera has several built-in automated analytics, but in case of emergency you always have any ability to zoom-in/out on the area of interest and continue tracking if necessary.
There are many locations where PTZ camera could be placed. Usually, for outdoor monitoring: parking lots, pools and common areas. And for indoor use: retail space, lobby, offices and common areas. It all depends on the existing infrastructure and the coverage your are trying to get.
Like any other form-factor security camera, PTZ has it’s own disadvantages. The biggest two are:
