How long should a commercial property retain security video?

Short answer

There is no universal retention period for every property. The policy should reflect incident-discovery time, operating risk, insurance and legal guidance, privacy obligations and the cost of maintaining reliable evidence. The selected duration must then be verified against real camera bitrates, recording modes, redundancy and usable storage.

01

Start with incident discovery

A property should consider how long it may take for vehicle damage, guest complaints, access disputes, injuries, theft or other incidents to be reported and escalated to the person who can preserve footage.

02

Calculate from real recording settings

Resolution alone does not determine storage. Codec, bitrate, frame rate, scene movement, continuous or event recording, audio, analytics and overhead all change capacity.

03

Protect evidence quality

Reducing bitrate or frame rate can extend retention while removing useful detail. The retained footage must still meet the assigned identification or overview objective.

04

Document preservation and deletion

Define who can export video, how incident footage is preserved, how requests are approved and when ordinary recordings are overwritten. Legal and insurance counsel should review policy where appropriate.

Buyer questions

Direct answers for decision-makers and answer engines.

These answers establish a planning baseline. Site conditions and written requirements still control the final design.

Is 30 days of video retention enough?+

It may be appropriate for some properties and inadequate for others. The decision should follow incident-discovery time, risk, policy and verified storage calculations.

Does motion recording always save storage?+

It can, but poor detection, missing pre-event time or scene conditions may lose context. Event recording must be tested against realistic activity.

Should LPR data use the same retention period as video?+

Not automatically. Plate metadata, associated images and overview video may have different operational, privacy and platform considerations.

How often should retention be verified?+

Check it after camera, quality or storage changes and on a documented schedule. A configured target is not proof that the recorder is achieving it.
