How should security cameras and networks be protected from surges?
Use a layered strategy: facility-level protection, correctly grounded electrical service, point-of-use protection, UPS backup and protection for exposed copper data or PoE lines. Fiber can reduce conductive pathways between buildings, but equipment power and terminations still require planning.
Why one power strip is not enough
A surge can enter through utility power, outdoor copper, gates, poles, inter-building links or grounding differences. Protection must follow the actual pathways.
What a UPS does
A UPS provides short-term runtime and cleaner shutdown or ride-through. It does not replace grounding, bonding or surge protection.
Coastal inspection matters
Protection devices are sacrificial. After significant events, systems should be inspected and failed protection replaced rather than assumed functional.
